An overnight stay changes how you can enjoy Ghent. Instead of fitting every stop between two trains, you can give the historic centre one day and another part of the city a second. This suggested weekend plan groups your activities so that you spend less time doubling back and more time enjoying your stay.

Day one: keep the historic centre together

Begin with a walk rather than a long string of reservations. Korenmarkt, the riverside and Sint-Baafsplein make a useful first-day cluster. Browse our Graslei and Korenlei walking guide and choose one indoor highlight to give the afternoon a clear focus.

If Gravensteen is your priority, make that your main booking. If you are travelling for art, build the day around the Altarpiece instead. Leave the remaining sights as options, not obligations. Your first afternoon should still have room for lunch and a change of plan.

Make the overnight stay count

After dinner, go back outside if the weather and your energy allow it. An evening stroll offers a different way to notice the city, and staying locally means you can keep it short without worrying about the last train. See our Ghent evening-walk guide for a flexible starting point.

Choose your dinner area before you are tired. Make any restaurant booking directly and leave time to return to your accommodation if you want to change. A weekend feels more relaxed when the evening is not simply the day’s unfinished sightseeing.

Day two: choose an art or green-space theme

For a change of setting, consider the Arts Quarter around Citadelpark. Pick one museum according to your interests rather than assuming a larger list means a better day. MSK focuses on fine art, while S.M.A.K. gives you a contemporary-art option. Check their current programmes through the official museum links.

Prefer an outdoor day? Use our guide to quieter places in Ghent to choose a green-space visit. Give yourself the freedom to shorten the walk if the weather turns; an appealing plan B is better than spending a wet afternoon crossing the city.

Leave a final pause before departure

Check out, handle your luggage, and confirm how you will get back to the station before booking the last activity. An attraction near your first day’s sights may not be convenient for your departure. Work backwards from your train instead of squeezing the train around your plans.

A traditional Thai massage can be part of that quieter second day when an appointment is available. Our studio is near Gent-Sint-Pieters, but your visit still needs its own travel allowance. Book ahead, then let the rest of the afternoon stay simple.

A practical question

Should I buy a CityCard for a weekend?

Compare the current CityCard inclusions with the attractions and transport you will actually use. It is a budgeting decision, not a requirement for following this itinerary.
